Custom Pool Design in Dallas, McKinney, Frisco & Prosper, TX

Most pool problems aren't pool problems — they're landscape problems. Decking that traps standing water, plant beds that dump mulch and runoff back into the pool, foundations poured without accounting for expansive clay movement under the coping. Grayscape designs pools as part of the whole property, coordinating pool shape, decking, planting, drainage, and hardscape into one plan instead of dropping a pool into a yard and landscaping around it afterward.

What's included in pool design

  • Pool shape and placement planning — sited for sun exposure, privacy, sightlines from the house, and setback/easement compliance

  • Decking and coping design — travertine, pavers, or stamped concrete selected for slip resistance and heat (a real issue with dark stone in July)

  • Surrounding hardscape — sun shelves, tanning ledges, seating walls, and connections to outdoor kitchens or covered living spaces

  • Drainage integration — grading and drain systems that keep runoff and irrigation water out of the pool basin

  • Planting design — root-safe plant selection and bed placement so trees and shrubs don't undermine pool structure or clog skimmers

  • Pool coordination — we work alongside your licensed pool builder (or refer one) to align structural, plumbing, and landscape timelines

Why plan the landscape and the pool together

We're not a pool construction company — we're the design partner that makes sure the 400 square feet of decking, the retaining wall on a sloped lot, the outdoor kitchen ten feet away, and the pool itself are drawn on one plan before anyone breaks ground. This catches problems early: a tree that needs to move before excavation, a grade change that needs a retaining wall, an HOA setback that affects pool placement. Clients who bring us in during the design phase — rather than after the pool is already poured — consistently save money on rework and end up with decking, lighting, and planting that actually match their new pool instead of being reverse-engineered around it.

Our Process

  • Site analysis — grading, drainage, sun path, tree canopy, and setback/easement review

  • Pool and hardscape layout — shape, decking material, and surrounding hardscape planned together

  • Coordination with your pool builder — structural and plumbing plans aligned with landscape grading and drainage

  • Planting and lighting design — root-safe, low-maintenance planting and lighting that highlights the pool at night

  • Final walkthrough — full property review once decking, planting, and hardscape are complete

FAQ

Do you build the pool itself?

We design the surrounding landscape, decking, and hardscape and coordinate closely with a licensed pool contractor for the pool shell, plumbing, and equipment. If you don't already have a pool builder, we can recommend trusted local partners.

When should I bring in a landscape designer if I'm planning a pool?

Before the pool contract is signed, if possible. Grading, tree removal, drainage, and hardscape connections are far cheaper to plan upfront than to retrofit after the pool is poured.

What's the best decking material for North Texas heat?

Light-colored travertine and certain porcelain pavers stay noticeably cooler underfoot than dark stone or standard concrete — a real comfort difference during a Texas summer. We'll walk you through options based on your budget and style.

Can you landscape around an existing pool?

Yes — this is a common project, especially fixing drainage that runs toward the pool, replacing failing plant beds, or adding hardscape and a covered structure around a pool that was landscaped as an afterthought.

Will HOA approval slow down my pool project?

It can add a few weeks. We prepare complete design packages up front — pool footprint, decking, fencing, and plant plan — so most HOA architectural committees can review everything in one pass.
